AN honorary gong has been awarded to the director of the British Museum in London for his long-running support of Australian art and culture.

Governor-General Quentin Bryce on Friday announced that Neil MacGregor had been appointed an honorary officer in the general division of the Order of Australia.

The official citation says Mr MacGregor had promoted Australia and Australian art and flora in Britain through a series of exhibitions, collections of prints and drawings and lecture visits to Australia.

"Mr MacGregor's collaboration with Australian museums and his contribution to promoting Australian art has been outstanding," it said.

Also appointed an honorary officer in the general division of the Order of Australia was West Australian businessman Bernard Wright.

"Mr Wright is a retired certified practising accountant and a businessman who has made a sustained and considerable contribution to the accounting profession, including to the Perth Stock Exchange, to business and to the general community in Western Australia," it said.
